The summer holidays are well behind us now and the new term has properly started at the New Curiosity Shop. Our students are working hard and the first assignments are starting to come in. There is a new kind of course on offer this session and Noel Chidwick has the details about our Three Wishes Courses. These are ideal for the first-time online learner or for those of you who don’t have the time just yet to get involved in a full-blown course.
Journalism is the theme of our Teaching Online slot this issue. Krys Wareing talked to me about her course and the results are here for you to read. Understanding Journalism is a course for anyone who wants to write, particularly if you have specialist knowledge that the world should hear about.
The New Economics rounds up our main articles for September with a discussion of fairer tax systems. How would you like to pay a few percent in tax rather than your current bill? Take a look at Margaret Legum’s article.

NIACE Big Conversation reaches Climax
At what is a critical time for adult learning, learners and providers will attend an over-subscribed hearing - in London next Tuesday - to hear evidence from representatives of 25 leading organisations; and debate what the future settlement for adult learning should be.
The Big Conversation Adult Learning Enquiry Hearing, organised by NIACE, will be held in Westminster. The Enquiry is the climax of NIACE’s Big Conversation and will challenge the recent cuts in provision, the increases in course fees and the loss of hundreds of thousands of opportunities to adult learners. A dossier of evidence will be produced and presented to the Government to demonstrate the depth of concern throughout institutions, industry and the public to current policy... (more from NIACE)
