This month we highlight a couple of contrasting courses.

How to Learn Online

Perhaps you have still not signed up for a course. Maybe you are wondering what online learning is all about. Or perhaps you are a little nervous about what a course might entail. Well, why not try this short course? Although it only lasts for two weeks, it is tutor supported and so gives you a taste for how other courses at the New Curiosity Shop will work. You will be introduced to some of the ideas behind online learning and look at some of the advantages. You will find out what sort of learner you are and see how online learning might benefit you. This course is tutored by Noel – partner, and one of the founders of the New Curiosity Shop – and he has oodles of experience encouraging people to explore the benefits of online learning. The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

This course, written and tutored by David Hastie, examines how a variety of writers have explored urban and rural issues by looking at a selection of Scottish Short Stories. This fascinating course will introduce you to a number of Scottish writers including A. L. Kennedy, Neil Gunn, George Mackay Brown, Hugh McDiarmid, James Kelman and Naomi Mitchison. After an introduction to the Scottish short story genre you will be guided through a critical examination of 17 of the stories contained in the set book The Devil and the Giro, edited by Carl Macdougall.
