Have you ever wondered what goes on ‘behind the scenes' in your garden? Have you wanted to understand more how climate and weather influence what you can grow? If you have this is the course for you.

The Ecology of Your Garden covers aspects of ecology with particular reference to the garden setting. We will explore: Climate and weather; habitats and food chains; soil - its chemistry and living components; and plant communities.

During the course you will be encouraged to use your own garden to help you explore some of the issues raised and to share insights with your tutor and fellow students.

Outline

• To introduce some of the fundamental concepts of ecology;

• To demonstrate how these are at play within the context of a cultivated space - the garden;

• To enable you to assess your garden from an ecological perspective; and

• To enable you to tend your garden using a more informed approach.

Who should take this course?

This course will be of interest to enquiring gardeners who wish to understand some of the natural processes at work in their plots. So informed, they will be more able to work 'with' rather than 'against' nature in creating beautiful and productive gardens

You will need

Compass; maximum and minimum thermometer ( 2 for preference); simple rain gauge; digital camera or scanner to upload photographs.

Entry Requirements

An interest in plants and gardens and an enquiring spirit. Some basic 'school' science would aid understanding of some aspects.

How long is this course?

About 9 hours, and we suggest you set aside about 4 hours a week - but it's up to you. You will have tutor support for months. You will have access to your course for a year.
