New NCS Website
The sharp eyed ones amongst you will have noticed that the web site has had a bit of a spruce up. It’s essentially the same as the old site, but is now built using WordPress. This makes it easier to manage and edit.
If all that means nothing to you, then count yourself amongst the blessed who live normal lives. Just enjoy the colours.
Essential Skills in Counselling
Counselling is a growing profession, and for many counselling practitioners a course such as this is a first step to becoming a counsellor.
As well as providing you with an opportunity to increase your understanding of counselling, this course will also enable you to develop some important skills which you might be able to apply in your work context and in the wider aspect of your life.
The first run of this course begins on 4th May, but bookings are possible now.
For full details and enrolment details, take a look at: Essential Skills in Counselling.
Note: This course is approved for ILA Scotland Funding. If you qualify, please let us know and we will process your application.
The iPad – a real device for learning?
The iPad. At last: a bit of learning technology kit that won’t get in the way of learning. Finally, a device that will actually enhance learning, and in my particular interest, online learning at home.
Tae the Immortal Memory
A happy Burns’ Nicht tae ane an’ a.’ We’re looking forward tae oor haggis and champit neeps and tatties and we hope you can join in too. If none of this makes any sense to you, may we recommend a visit to the online Scots dictionary. And if that rouses your interest in things Scottish, why not try a course of Scottish History with the New Curiosity Shop.
If tonight you are having your first Burns’ Supper, there are full instructions here at rabbie-burns.com. Have fun.
A Guid New Year
It’s a new year and time for some new initiatives. If you are enjoying winter weather as snowy as we are in Scotland, it might be an idea to find an indoor pursuit as we start 2010. What better way to while away the hours while you wait for the snow ploughs than by expanding your mind with an NCS course?
We hope you all thaw out soon and that 2010 will be a very good year for you.
Crash On The Moon
In the small hours of tomorrow morning, NASA’s LCROSS spacecraft will crash land on the moon. The craft will be deliberately hard-landed in two sections providing data about the composition of the lunar surface. NASA TV will provide live coverage and you can find out more on the Spaceweather site.
BBC Writing Competition
The BBC is running a competition called My Story in which the winning stories will be made into a TV series. The top five will be published in a book and most of the entries will make their way onto the BBC web site.
NCS tutor, Joanna Howard, may be able to give you some help in crafting a winning entry. Have a look at her course, Your Story – Writing a Life, which can guide you in writing your unique personal story. A few lessons with Jo and you could be writing a BBC TV episode.
Anglo Saxon Treasure Horde found in Staffordshire
The biggest ever horde of anglo saxon gold has been found in a field in Staffordshire. Metal detectorist Terry Herbert discovered the 5kg of gold and 2.5kg of silver. The find is treasure trove and will now be valued. Mr Herbert and the land owner can expect a substantial reward.
Leslie Webster, former keeper at the British Museum’s Department of Prehistory and Europe, said, “This is going to alter our perceptions of Anglo-Saxon England as radically, if not more so, as the Sutton Hoo discoveries.” It is a wonderful new source of evidence for archaeologists studying this hidden period of British history.
